this could be us is an interactive audiovisual organism capable of responding to stimuli from multiple users simultaneously. An endless, algorithmic tape of audiovisual particles consisting of amateur footage organized algorithmically. “This could be us,” and indeed we are.

This work is in the context of Pierpaolo Ovarini's research, which is based on the proposal of a “tactile” and organic virtual world of the Internet, governed by ecosystem laws comparable to those of nature. In the transfer of concepts from the natural to the virtual world, a conflict arises due to the discrepancies between the two, which inevitably requires new forms and hybridized definitions.

The images that inhabit the frame come from the Bologna-based Home Movies archive and were selected for their compatibility with contemporary amateur content and grain quality. “It could be us...” and indeed it is: kittens, vacations, hikes, pets, social events. The same subjects populate the contemporary audiovisual stream of memes on the Internet, and thus these old home movies can be proposed as perfect examples of “User Generated Content,” just like tik tok or reel. Moreover, the post-digital tastes of today's users see the analog flaws that make up the grain of 1960s amateur films as something fascinating and valuable, which gives these images a new value by reinterpreting them in a contemporary key.

this could be us is an interactive audiovisual organism capable of responding to stimuli from multiple users simultaneously. The work outlines an audiovisual Internet landscape in real space through the combination of projections, video mapping, smartphones and speakers. The mechanism of “this could be us” is inspired by the audiovisual fruition formats found in modern social networks. An endless, algorithmic ribbon of audiovisual particles composed of amateur footage organized in an algorithmic way that creates an audiovisual stream as opposed to standard linear editing. The six streams of this audiovisual content can be explored by users through the action of swiping, exposing this usually private process and creating a new experience of collective enjoyment. A generative experience based on video and sound associations suggested by the work's algorithm.
