bio
My name is Pierpaolo Ovarini and I am a sound artist, composer and music producer. I was born in Urbino and trained in Electronic Music and Sound Design in Bologna. Currently I work as a PhD researcher at Tempo Reale in Florence, under the academic supervision of the Fine Arts Academy of Naples and I am a visiting student at CIRMMT in Canada. I'm also part of Pase Platform's team in Venice and I am co-founder of the creative studio Spazio XI in Pesaro.

Over the years, I have made several albums and collaborations (also under the pseudonym of redmattre), performing in concerts and exhibitions in Italy and abroad. The sound textures of the materials in my work comes from the virtual world of the Internet, digital sharing culture, field recordings or uncanny creations of neural software. I sometimes publish music under the name of 'redmattre' for solo or production projects, the music genres explored are varied but all coming togheter from violent EDM scrapes and stumbling rythms. My live sets can be improvisations, live electronics or sound perfomances.

artist statement
(2026) my research is about exploring the 'soundscape of the internet' and the acoustic communities that co-inhabit virtual space in a mixture of users, bots, artificial intelligences, interfaces, malware and memes. Formal and aesthetic elements are extrapolated and intertwined with those of the real world, implying hybrid installation and compositional languages capable of generating interactive or site-specific spatial music performances or sound installations. I see sound as a tangible, sculptural element, intentionally plastic.

research abstract
(2027) I am building a creative IoT ecosystem to design inhabitable virtual sound spaces. This concept comes to life through two software and hardware projects called: Cielo, web-based 3D graphical interface. A simplified control server for local network sound spatialization, with full OSC and WebSocket support. Nuvola, Raspberry Pi framework & OSC interface: Deeply integrated with Halo headband hardware. Acts as the core AAR interface with Wi-Fi room localization and head tracking capabilities. These two projects form the core of an AAR ecosystem for space design and sound rendering - comprising of wearable sound devices - that I am developing as part of my PhD research in Italy and Canada. The research aims to build technology within a theoretical and cultural framework, ensuring a design that is both stable and speculative, yet still functional, intuitive, and open enough to be adopted by a diverse range of creative practitioners across the arts and design.
